The tale of EULENSPIEGEL

Who was EULENSPIEGEL? A young man of spirit an wit. He was born in the vicinity of Braunschweig about 1300. And he felt at home in every European country. Wherever he arrived on his wanderings he always wore a multicoloured cap with tinkle bells. He wanted people to take him for a fool. B But the symbol of wisdom, and his sceptre - he was a genuine sovereign -, and in the true sense of the word an independent man, - a mirror. This mirror he held up in front of his contemporaries in order that they might know themselves. Often this was only possible through some of his foolish pranks. He performed so many that people began to record them, as for example the famous wood cut on the front piece of this menu card. In 1515 there appered the first book about EULENSPIEGEL'S tricks. They were printed again and again for old and young, for the wise and the very wise. He was indeed a grand spirit. Therefore many great men have personified him in their works. From the poets GERHART HAUPTMANN to ERICH KÄSTNER, you heart the tales about him. Composers like RICHARD STRAUSS and BELA BARTOK, have created symphonic poems under the title EULENSPIEGEL, and E.N. von REZNICEK wrote an opera with the name of the biggest rogue in history. And all these works are filled with the spirit of lightness that also surround the guest in the SALZBURGIAN EULENSPIEGEL. When the glasses clink together, the jingle bells of Eulenspiegel's cap are ringing at the same time. Does he not peep from behind that barrel or out the chimney? But here he does not hold out a mirror in front of you, here he is offering you a menu card. It is reflecting your culinary wishes and - is realising them. Examine and select... and recognize yourself; for not only in the wine you find the truth.
